Community Service Guide for Youth
The Yolo County Community Service Directory is a project of the Youth Development Programs at the Yolo County Office of Education. Serving the community should be an integral part of our young peoples’ lives. It gives them a chance to be leaders and contributors to make this world a better place. Meaningful community service can also provide an avenue for career exploration as well as a chance to apply classroom knowledge in “real world” setting. As students work at food banks, with SPCA or with local health care centers, they develop valuable skills such as people skills, communication skills and sometimes computer skills -- all very necessary in today’s world of work. Many students will discover a greater appreciation for their own lives and realize that learning never stops! What’s more, community service has known to change the lives of not only those who are served but those who serve selflessly!

Yolo County Friday Night Live
Who knew alcohol and drug prevention could be so much fun, but with Yolo County’s Friday Night Live (FNL) program, that is exactly what you will find. The statewide program, developed in 1984, began as a pilot dedicated to reducing deaths and injuries caused by teens driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Today, FNL programs are focused on forming youth/adult partnerships and providing programs rich in opportunities and support so young people will be less likely to engage in problem behaviors, more likely to achieve in school, and more likely to attend higher education and secure gainful employment. To learn more about FNL programs, or to schedule a presentation in your school, call (530)666-8715 or e-mail Woodland Coalition for Youth member Debbie Carrion.

S.T.A.K.E Act Undercover Teen Agent Program
S.T.A.K.E. stands for Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement. Your mission: as a S.T.A.K.E. Act agent, you will be involved in undercover purchases of tobacco products. With the help of a Health Department Investigator, you will try to verify that merchants are not selling tobacco products to teenagers. All you have to do is: 1) have some free time, 2) desire to help your community and 3) accompany agents to purchase tobacco products. Your rewards: as an agent you will get paid for every store you visit with a minimum of $20 per day. Plus, for every 4 hours you work, you get a free meal. It looks great on college or job applications. Most importantly, you are contributing to your community.
